There are a few different origin stories associated with Corduroy fabric. The first being that the word corduroy itself came from “cord du roi” or cord of the king. This folk etymology has been proven false and it is now believed that the word comes from a mix of the words “cord” and “duroy”. “Cord“ being the row-like texture or pattern found on the fabric and “duroy“ being adurable woolen cloth made in England throughout the 18th century and worn by factory workers in Manchester during the same time period.
At Adsum, we’re less concerned about the false kingship or royalty linked with the fabric. Instead, we appreciate the durable, practical and nostalgic characteristics associated with the cloth, which is why we applied a thick 11 wale variation to our Premium BD, Hogan Pant and Corduroy Hat that can be found in our first FW20 installment.
This season, we finished our cord shirting with black high shine two hole metal buttons that complement the thick main body fabric. Because of the roomier fit, the Corduroy Premium Buttondown works great as an overshirt as well as a standalone dress shirt.
For the Hogan Pant, we decided to remove the perma-cuff seen on our SS20 iteration and finished the leg opening with a regular 1” hem. We also adjusted front rise, back rise and waist band specs so that the Hogan pant sits lower on the waist and has a comfortable seat area. Custom dyed corozonut buttons were applied to the front closure and back pockets and a tonal Adsum embroidery can be found above the back right pocket welt.
Our Corduroy Hat is constructed using a lower profile crown compared to ourother caps in the collection and a perma-curve brim. Although we decided to keep branding off of the front of the hat, our classic Adsum tab label can be seen sewn into the back strap as well as custom made sliders that feature raised Adsum logos on the top and bottom of the slider.
From kings to East Coast preps, and everything inbetween; Corduroy is the fabric you want to reach for in the autumn months.
